Acoustic & Electric Guitar Strings Explained

Walk into a well-stocked guitar shop and the wall of strings can be genuinely overwhelming: different materials, gauges, coatings and brands, all claiming to sound and feel different. Here's a plain-English guide to what actually matters when choosing strings.

Acoustic string materials

Most steel-string acoustic strings use a wound bronze alloy on the bass strings and plain steel on the trebles. The two most common alloys are 80/20 bronze, which has a bright, crisp tone that mellows fairly quickly, and phosphor bronze, which is slightly warmer and generally holds its tone for longer. Neither is objectively better, it comes down to the sound you're after and the guitar you're playing it on.

Classical and nylon strings

Classical guitars use a completely different system: clear nylon or fluorocarbon on the treble strings, and nylon wound with metal on the bass strings. These are much lower tension than steel strings and are not interchangeable with a steel-string guitar, which isn't braced or built to handle the pull of steel strings at pitch.

Coated vs uncoated

Coated strings have a thin polymer layer that helps resist the sweat, oil and grime that gradually kill a string's tone. They generally last longer before sounding dull, though some players feel coated strings sacrifice a small amount of brightness and sustain compared to a fresh uncoated set. It's a genuine trade-off rather than a clear winner either way.

Understanding gauge

Gauge refers to the thickness of the strings, usually described by the diameter of the high E string in thousandths of an inch, such as extra light (.010), light (.012) or medium (.013). Heavier gauges generally deliver more volume and low-end punch but require more finger strength to fret comfortably, while lighter gauges are easier to play but produce a bit less output. Your guitar's scale length and setup also affect how a given gauge actually feels, so it's worth experimenting to find what suits you.

Electric guitar strings

Electric strings are typically nickel-plated steel or pure nickel, and because pickups sense string vibration magnetically rather than relying on the body to project sound acoustically, gauge choice comes down more to playing feel and tuning stability than volume.

How to choose

If you're not sure where to start, sticking with the gauge and material your guitar came with is a safe baseline. From there, it's worth trying a couple of different options over time. Small changes in material, coating or gauge can noticeably shift how a guitar feels and sounds, and the only real way to know what you prefer is to try it for yourself.
