The case for starting on acoustic

Acoustic guitars need nothing extra to play, no amp, no cables, just pick it up and go. Many teachers also argue that acoustic's heavier strings and generally higher action build stronger fretting-hand technique early, since there's less room for sloppy habits to hide. If your musical taste leans toward folk, blues, country or unplugged singer-songwriter styles, learning on the instrument you'll actually end up playing long-term makes a lot of sense.

The case for starting on electric

Electric guitars are generally easier on the fingers in the first few weeks, with lighter strings and lower, more adjustable action, which some new players find keeps motivation higher during that tricky early period. If your musical interest leans toward genres built around electric tone and effects, there's a reasonable argument for starting on the instrument that actually matches your goals.

What the research and teaching experience actually suggests

Genuinely, both camps have valid points, and there isn't strong evidence that one produces meaningfully better long-term guitarists than the other. What seems to matter far more is consistency of practice and genuine enjoyment of the instrument you're playing, both of which are heavily influenced by whether the guitar suits the music you actually want to play.

The most useful question to ask yourself

Rather than which is "better" to learn on, ask yourself which sound you're actually chasing. If you picked up a guitar because of acoustic folk, blues or country music, start there. If it was electric-driven rock or blues that got you interested, that's a perfectly valid starting point too. Motivation tends to follow genuine musical interest more than any theoretical learning advantage.

Skills transfer significantly between acoustic and electric, chord shapes, scales, and general technique carry across both. Plenty of well-known players move fluidly between the two throughout their careers. Whichever you start on, you're building a foundation that will serve you on the other instrument too, if and when you decide to explore it.
