What Is a Truss Rod and How Does It Work?

If you've ever had a guitar tech mention "adjusting the truss rod" and nodded along without really knowing what that meant, you're in good company. It's one of those parts of a guitar that does a huge amount of work without ever being seen. Here's what it actually is and why it matters.

What a truss rod does

A truss rod is a metal rod that runs inside the neck, usually beneath the fretboard, and its job is to counteract the enormous pulling force of the strings. Six steel strings at tension pull the neck forward into a slight curve called relief, and the truss rod pushes back against that pull, letting you fine-tune exactly how much curve the neck holds.

Why a small amount of curve is actually correct

It's a common assumption that a perfectly straight neck is the goal, but that's not quite right. A very slight forward curve, generally just a fraction of a millimetre when measured at the middle of the neck, actually gives the strings enough clearance to vibrate freely without buzzing against the frets. Too much relief and the action feels high and floppy. Too little (or the neck curving backward) and the guitar buzzes, particularly in the lower frets.

How adjustments are made

Truss rod adjustments are made at one end of the rod, usually accessed either just inside the soundhole or under a small cover at the headstock, depending on the guitar. Turning it one way tightens the rod and pulls the neck straighter (reducing relief), while the other way loosens it and lets the strings pull more curve into the neck (increasing relief).

Why it needs adjusting at all

Wood moves. Changes in humidity and temperature affect the neck over time, and truss rods are what allow a guitar to be brought back into proper adjustment rather than needing a new neck every time the seasons change. It's completely normal for a guitar to need a small truss rod tweak once or twice a year, particularly around big seasonal humidity shifts.

Should you adjust it yourself?

Truss rod adjustments are genuinely small movements, often a fraction of a turn, and they interact with other parts of the setup like nut height and saddle height. It's easy to get it wrong if you're not familiar with the process, and forcing a truss rod that's already at the end of its adjustment range can cause real damage. If your action feels off, it's worth having it checked and adjusted properly rather than guessing.
