In 1929 Martin added carved top instruments to their line of mandolins. The first two models were the Style 15 and Style 20. The style 20 was probably inspired by the Lyon & Healy instruments with oval sound holes and 2-point body design. The Style 20 was the most successful model thanks to Bill Bolick of the Blue Sky Boys, who played it throughout their prolific performing and recording career.
This 1929 Style 20, from the first year of production, features a triple bound natural finish carved spruce top and highly figured flame maple back & sides. The oval sound hole has a single strand of purling binding the inner rim of the sound hole, surrounded by a triple ring of alternating wood for the rosette. The engraved tailpiece and original Waverly 4-on-a-plate tuning machines are present and in excellent condition. There is one small repaired crack on the side by the neck join, and minimal playwear for a nearly century-old instrument! It's all original, down to the frets which are low but very playable. Playability is superb, with a ow fast action and a rich, complex tone that is perfect for country or folk music. Includes hardshell case.
