The John Buckham Blackwood Dreadnought is a handcrafted acoustic guitar of rare distinction, built by one of Australia's most thoughtful and technically sophisticated independent luthiers from his workshop just outside Wauchope on the New South Wales Mid North Coast. Inspired by a visit to the workshop of celebrated English luthier Andy Manson in 2006, John Buckham has spent nearly two decades refining a personal approach to guitar building that combines 21st century materials science with the finest traditions of hand lutherie - every neck carved by hand and eye using rasps, files, scrapers, and sandpaper, with no CNC machining involved at any stage of construction.

The body shape is itself a meaningful design statement - a modified dreadnought attributed to Californian master luthier Ervin Somogyi, one of the most celebrated and influential acoustic guitar designers of the modern era, featuring a tighter waist that recalls the elegant proportions of smaller body formats while maintaining full dreadnought dimensions for maximum volume, projection, and bass authority. The tonal heart of this dreadnought is a European spruce top over Australian Blackwood back and sides - Blackwood harvested personally by the luthier from a single tree on a dairy farm on the Comboyne Plateau west of Wauchope, selected specifically for its lower density relative to other Blackwood sets, a deliberate choice that contributes to the overall efficiency of the vibrating system and results in greater volume and tonal richness. A Curly Yarran bridge departs from the guitar's appointment scheme, while Curly Yarran - a desert acacia and one of the hardest woods on the planet - provides the binding and trim throughout. Old growth Brazilian mahogany forms the neck.

Beneath the hood lies what makes a Buckham guitar truly remarkable: John's personal interpretation of falcate bracing, a system designed by renowned luthier and researcher Trevor Gore that replaces traditional X-bracing with curved, laminated bracing elements incorporating carbon fibre. The result is a soundboard that is lighter, more efficient, and capable of producing more and higher overtones than conventional bracing allows - delivering greater volume, richer harmonic complexity, and a responsiveness across the full tonal range that the dreadnought format amplifies to magnificent effect. Semi-hemispherical fret end treatment to genuine Gold EVO fretwire, compound radius fingerboard, carbon fibre neck reinforcement, and Gotoh 510 tuners complete an instrument that stands among the finest handmade acoustic guitars produced in Australia today.

Features

  • European spruce top over personally harvested Australian Blackwood back and sides - the Blackwood selected specifically for lower density to maximise the efficiency of the vibrating system - delivers greater volume, richer overtones, and a tonal complexity that reflects the unique provenance of the timber.
  • Modified dreadnought body shape attributed to Californian master luthier Ervin Somogyi features a tighter waist that refines the standard dreadnought geometry for improved playing comfort and visual elegance while preserving the full projection and bass authority of the larger format.
  • John Buckham's personal interpretation of Trevor Gore's falcate bracing pairs curved, laminated, carbon fibre-reinforced bracing elements with the spruce top for a lighter, more responsive soundboard capable of producing more and higher overtones than conventional X-bracing.
  • Curly Yarran appointments - a desert acacia and one of the hardest timbers on earth - provide a stunning visual contrast to the spruce top and figured Blackwood body, with a Curly Yarran bridge completing the instrument's cohesive aesthetic vision.
  • Old growth Brazilian mahogany neck with carbon fibre reinforcement, semi-hemispherical fret end treatment to Gold EVO fretwire, and compound radius 16-20" fingerboard deliver a playing experience of exceptional comfort, refinement, and long-term stability.
