The Gibson ES-175 is one of the most historically significant and enduringly respected archtop electric guitars ever produced, first introduced in 1949 and played by some of the greatest jazz guitarists of the twentieth century, including Joe Pass, Pat Metheny and Herb Ellis. This 2006 example presents in great condition with a particularly striking highly flamed maple top, back and sides, a visual distinction that sets it apart from standard production examples. The fully hollow single-cutaway laminated maple body delivers the warm, woody and deeply resonant archtop tone the 175 is celebrated for, with the natural finish allowing the flame figure to speak for itself.
Fitted with dual humbuckers in the neck and bridge positions, this D configuration provides the tonal versatility to cover everything from warm, full jazz chord voicings to cutting single-note lines, with the parallel wiring and hollow body construction contributing to the ES-175’s characteristically smooth, singing midrange. Currently set up with a medium action, this 2006-built guitar is ideal for jazz players, blues guitarists and serious collectors who want a genuinely iconic American archtop electric with outstanding figured tonewoods.
