Andy Allen's Maton custom shop instruments are among the most sought-after acoustic guitars produced in the country, built with the kind of individual attention, tonal insight, and patient craftsmanship that simply cannot be replicated by any production process. This dreadnought brings together two of Australia's most distinctive and cherished tonewoods - a Bunya pine top paired with select Victorian Blackwood back, sides, and neck - in a tonewood combination that is as uniquely and gloriously Australian as the instrument itself.

Bunya pine is a tonewood of extraordinary character - bright, clear, and brilliantly articulate with a natural resonance that rewards every nuance of playing technique and only deepens with age. Victorian Blackwood, a close relative of Hawaiian Koa, contributes warmth, complexity, and a shimmering harmonic richness that elevates this pairing beyond anything a standard spruce and rosewood combination can offer. A UV gloss Triburst finish applied over this spectacular tonewood selection makes this one of the most visually arresting dreadnoughts you will ever encounter - the burst deepening beautifully across the grain of the Bunya top and the figured figure of the Blackwood back and sides. Mother of pearl block fingerboard inlays, ebony fingerboard and bridge with white binding, gold machine heads with pearl buttons, gold AP5 Pro pickup system, and a Maton Custom Shop label complete an instrument of singular beauty and tonal distinction.

This 2016-built guitar is in great condition, with minimal playwear and a great medium action. There is some lacquer shrinkage on the back of the guitar, where the thin finish has sunk into the porous Blackwood and created some surface-level indentations - it's not visible in the photos, but it's worth mentioning on a guitar as special as this one. Overall it looks incredibly clean, and doesn't appear to have been played all that much! Andy's guitars are very much sought after these days, and this is a beautiful and unique Custom Shop guitar with some well thought-out specs. Includes original hardshell case.

Features

  • Bunya pine top paired with select Victorian Blackwood back, sides, and neck delivers a tonal character that is uniquely and gloriously Australian - bright, articulate, and richly warm, with the harmonic complexity that only the finest hand-selected tonewoods can provide.
  • Handbuilt by Andy Allen, one of the most celebrated luthiers in Australian guitar-making history, before his retirement from the Maton Custom Shop - making this a genuinely unrepeatable instrument from one of the great hands in Australian lutherie.
  • UV gloss Triburst finish applied over Bunya pine and Victorian Blackwood creates a breathtaking visual presence, the burst deepening across the grain of the top and the natural figure of the back and sides.
  • Mother of pearl block fingerboard inlays set into a white-bound ebony fingerboard, gold machine heads with pearl buttons, and an ebony bridge reflect a level of decorative refinement entirely consistent with a world-class custom shop instrument.
  • Maton AP5 Pro pickup system with gold end pin delivers the natural, transparent amplified tone that professional performers trust, built into a guitar that will only grow more magnificent with every passing year of play.
