The Waterloo WL-14 Scissortail is a special edition of the flagship WL-14 series, drawing its name from the Scissor-tailed Flycatcher, a bird common to the Central Texas Hill Country, and paying homage to the "Oriole" guitars produced by Kalamazoo between 1940 and 1942. Built with maple back and sides and vintage-inspired X-bracing, the Scissortail delivers excellent projection and focus while retaining the woody, characteristic tone that has made the WL-14 series so highly regarded among players seeking authentic prewar-style acoustic voicing.
A natural finish coupled with distinctive tortoise-style binding sets this instrument apart visually from other WL-14 models, while an original Scissortail decal applied to the headstock in true-to-era fashion completes the vintage homage. Handmade in Austin, Texas, every Waterloo guitar reflects genuine small-batch American craftsmanship rather than mass production. Ideal for blues, folk, and roots players who want the warm, focused, vintage-correct tone of a prewar-inspired small-body acoustic, and for collectors who appreciate the significance of the Oriole tradition this model honours.
This 2017-built (and sadly discontinued) guitar is in great condition, with light playwear and a wonderfully open, clear voice. There's light playwear to the top and pickguard, but it's been very well cared-for aside from one small repaired crack between the soundhole and neck extension. An LR Baggs M1 Active soundhole pickup has been professionally installed - we've removed it for now, but the internal wiring is ready to go and the pickup can be easily reattached if you should choose. A unique vintage-voiced 00 with endless charm and flawless build quality. Includes original hardshell case.
